Gympie motel gets tentative approval
The Queensland heritage listed Surface Hill Uniting Church will be preserved in a development of the historic site into a 38-room motel and restaurant after the proposal was given a tentative green light this week by Gympie Regional Council.
The plan is to demolish the Uniting Care Community building on site to make way for the Gympie Motel but to relocate the church hall beside the church and convert the Wesley Hall into office space.
The preliminary approval calls for the project to be scaled back to two storeys.
The 38 rooms will be joined by a manager’s dwelling.
The State Department of Environment and Heritage Protection has already given the project the go-ahead.
Built in1890 th,e Surface Hill Uniting Church built was the third church to be built on the site.
