No compromise on penalty rates

If the hospitality was expecting any relief in the penalty wage rates it is going to have to wait.

Prime minister Julia Gillard has promised changes to the Fair Work Act will enshrine penalty rates, shift loading and public holiday pay when the Fair Work Commission sets award rates and conditions.

Ms Gillard said, “We will make it clear in law that there needs to be additional remuneration for employees who work shift work, unsociable, irregular, unpredictable hours or on weekends and public holidays.”

Ms Gillard also defended her position on tightening the approvals process for 457 visas, stressing that the government’s crackdown on 457 visas would ensure temporary skilled workers only come from overseas when jobs cannot be filled locally.
