Councils Under Pressure to Approve Development

Any of NSW’s 152 local governments that do not process development applications within strict new timeframes will be forced to relinquish the development decision-making powers to an independent hearing and assessment panel.

State government planning reforms released this week require 80% of development approvals achieved within 25 days with detailed parameters for projects available in advance. The current average is more than 70 days.

These parameters will be determined after community consultation but individual projects will not be subject to public scrutiny. Projects such as apartment blocks must be approved if they comply with agreed criteria.

Planning minister Brad Hazzard said the new model could save the community and businesses about $174 million a year.
