Australians keen on culture
According to a survey conducted by HotelsCombined, Australians are increasingly adventurous with 49% citing the aspiration to experience new cultures as the main reason for travelling overseas.
Nearly half of respondents said they are travelling overseas more and while the majority are keen on the cultural aspects of overseas travel, one in four travellers cited cheaper prices as their main reason for travelling abroad. Travellers continue to look for great deals on hotel stays, with only 3% agreeing to pay more than $300 per night for an overseas hotel.
The survey also revealed that Aussies maintain their cultural identity as a nation of swimmers when holidaying, with only 6% claiming they would give up a pool in favour of a better price. In comparison, 64% said they would forgo gym facilities, 16% would compromise on location and 14% said they would do without Internet access.
Kristen McKenzie, head of community and public relations at HotelsCombined said the survey revealed some interesting insights into Australians travel habits.
“It’s not just the lure of lower prices and budget beach escapes pulling Aussie travellers overseas. While we still want great prices, there’s a strong desire to step outside our comfort zones and experience other cultures, as Australia matures into a nation of discerning and sophisticated travellers,” Ms McKenzie said.
Over the last 12 months, six of the top 10 destinations for Aussie travellers have been overseas. US destinations like New York City, Las Vegas and Honolulu have steadily jumped in popularity to join long-time holiday favourites Singapore, London and Bali.
The survey conducted by HotelsCombined also revealed:
• The majority of respondents claimed the average price they would pay for a hotel both in Australia and overseas is $100 – $150 AUD per night
• 37% of Australians said Aussie hotels are overpriced
• 77% of survey respondents also agreed that “it’s cheaper to travel overseas”
