Canberra steps back in time

Restaurateurs Gulbahar and Serif Kaya, owners of Barton’s Ottoman restaurant, have lodged an application with planning authorities for a boarding house on Franklin St in the Canberra suburb of Forrest.

”The accommodation would be aimed at visiting parliamentarians, journalists, business people, etc, for primarily long-term accommodation,” the development application says. ” The boarding house is conceived as a small, private, low-profile development specifically aimed at providing quiet residential-style accommodation for out-of-town guests.”

Plans call for a two-storey boutique boarding house with its 20 bedrooms arranged around a courtyard and swimming pool with no licence to sell liquor.

Canberra had many similar accommodation houses up until the 1950s when as many as one in five Canberrans lived in boarding houses.
