Big changes for Nelson Bay resort

Plans for a $19.7 million overhaul of the Marina Resort at Nelson Bay in NSW, which would make it one of the town’s biggest accommodation providers, were lodged with Port Stephens Council last week.

It also wants approval to demolish the existing Marina Resort hotel on Magnus St.

In its place would be an upmarket hotel with two separate hotel wings, six and seven storeys high. The hotel would have 70 guest rooms, a 389m² conference room, exhibition space, restaurant and 140-space basement car park.

Anton Chan has owned the Marina Resort since the early 1980s and said the redeveloped resort would attract a new kind of visitor to Nelson Bay. “One of the things missing is the corporate conference market on the higher end. With the market for domestic over-night visitors becoming less reliable, bigger developments were needed.

“The challenge is the season is getting shorter and shorter, so realistically it’s only three or four weeks of peak,” he said. “The rest is OK, just steady.”

The Environmental Impact Statement lodged with the council describes a third free-standing east wing building that could be built in the future subject to a further DA.
