Canberra Gets First Green Hotel
Geocon Constructors is to turn the vacant Julians House office complex in Canberra’s Woden into Australia’s first Green Star hotel – the Abode.
Geocon managing director Nick Georgalis says, “This building had been sitting here vacant for a couple of years and we saw it as an opportunity that would fit our model as an affordable, quality, green hotel building. The fact that we were able to reuse all the structure, all the floors, all the building’s façade and effectively just change the interior of the building and what we had to on the ground flour to create a new hotel was a huge initiative for the business.
“We were able to use energy efficient lighting, everything was fabricated and made in Australia, even the transport to get the material into the building was important. Every single aspect, every item that was delivered to site, how it was built, how it was put together has been gone through quite thoroughly by the team,” said Mr Georgalis.
