Glampackers planned for Townsville

A multi-million dollar upmarket backpackers resort and retail complex is planned for Townsville. It will be built on the Flinders St East entertainment strip.

Sydney hospitality business entrepreneur George Fleming confirmed his plan to construct the 48-bedroom glam-packers resort and said he hoped the development would be complete within 12 months.

Mr Fleming acquired the old Downtown motel site and has lodged a development application with council to demolish buildings on the site and develop the accommodation house with retail space on the ground level.

Former Consortium nightclub owner Jarrod McCracken is to advise on the project but was not involved financially.

Mr Fleming said he hopes to obtain approvals with the council and start work on site within a month.

He already owns the Melbas nightclub and hotel on the Gold Coast, the Diplomat at Alice Springs as well as tourism interests in the Northern Territory. He also purchased Stone Island resort off Bowen recently.
