Melbourne’s Adelphi reopens

The new owners of the 34-room boutique property Adelphi Hotel in Melbourne has re-opened after a refurbishment and settlement of a dispute with ATO that had the hotel closed for a year.

The new owner is Icon Hotels Group, comprising managing director Dion Chandler, Ozzie Kehir and Simon Ongarato.

The Adelphi Hotel, with its glass-bottom swimming pool overhanging Flinders Lane, has been “re-invented” as the world’s only ”dessert-themed” hotel. The dessert theme starts in the new lobby with jars of sweets and bowls of sticky toffee apples on the reception counter. In the rooms are more free sweets from the kitchen of French-trained Christie-Tanya Angwidjaja and internationally renowned pastry chef Pierrick Boyer.

Even the turn-down service is festooned with macaroons every night.

”The colours and textures of the hotel are all based off desserts,” said designer Fady.

Mr Chandler was manager of the Adelphi Hotel for the previous owner, the Gabriel Hotels Group, for four years before it went into liquidation.

The Adelphi Hotel was built in 1938 as a apparel warehouse before being transformed into a hotel in 1993 by Denton Corker Marshall architects.
