Tasmania eco resort gets OK

The Dorset Council voted unanimously to grant a planning permit to Melbourne Resort Development for a $185 million eco-tourism resort development for Musselroe Bay on Tasmania’s north-eastern tip.

The complex will include a 100-room resort building, 300 units, an 18-hole golf course and an airstrip.

A permit for a similar development was granted in 2006 but lapsed.

Dorset mayor Barry Jarvis estimates about 700 workers will be needed to build the resort over five years.

“The construction period, because it’s staged, we believe we can entice some builders and tradies back into the north of the state, knowing that you’re going to have work for five years. That’s the beauty of the staged process, it’s not trying to get it all done in the first 12 to 18 months and then it goes into a big lull.”
