Backpacker hostel for McLaren Vale
A new backpacker’s hostel in South Adelaide may be open as early as next August. Barossa Backpackers hostel owner Derry Geber has received approval from the Onkaparinga Council for a 72-bed budget accommodation complex in McLaren Vale.
And Onkaparinga Council hopes the first backpackers’ hostel in Adelaide’s south will eliminate illegal camping in the area.
The proposed development will have a seven-day-a-week reception with staff on duty at all times for security.
Mr Geber said the area desperately needs budget ¬accommodation particularly during the grape harvest and McLaren Vale was the perfect place to provide a hostel for overseas visitors and workers. He said the hostel would benefit the region’s popularity and its tourism and employment opportunities.
“Backpackers choose ¬McLaren Vale and the south because it is unique – they get the best of both worlds with the fantastic wine and the beach so close,” he said.
