Customers buying overseas not a problem for hospitality industry

Just over half (57 per cent) of Australian businesses in the hospitality sector believe they are not negatively affected by customers buying overseas products online, according to a 2013 survey conducted by GoHospitality.com.au.

The survey of over 340 business and non-business owners in the hospitality industry also revealed over half (53 per cent) of the participants prefer Australian made products regardless of price.

Business development leader for GoHospitality.com.au, Tony Haydar said, “Australian businesses are confident that customers will continue to buy Australian made products as many customers won’t sacrifice quality to save a few dollars.”

This is evident in the results as almost two thirds (62 per cent) of respondents believe Australian made hospitality supplies are better quality then those made overseas. Additionally three quarters of respondents believe quality is important when purchasing hospitality products with over half of respondents saying customers opt for quality over price.

“To succeed in the competitive marketplace Australian businesses in the hospitality sector need to focus on delivering consistently high quality products and services,” said Mr Haydar.

Many people are still purchasing Australian-made hospitality products as one quarter of respondents have purchased over 100 products from an Australian supplier in the past 12 months. Additionally, 30 per cent of respondents in the past 12 months have purchased between 11 and 24 products from Australian suppliers.

In comparison only seven per cent of respondents purchased from an overseas supplier in the last 12 months, with half of respondents purchasing less than 10 products from overseas suppliers.

“With many people still purchasing Australian made the future looks promising for the Australian hospitality industry,” said Mr Haydar.

Business and non-business owners in the hospitality industry were surveyed about the effects of major issues in their sector including financial, environmental issues and cost of resources.
