Hotel planned for Melbourne market site

Victorian developer MIT Australia – owned by education entrepreneurial husband and wife team Shesh Ghale and Jamuna Gurung – has lodged a building application with the state government for two towers at the corner of William and Franklin streets adjacent to Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market.

The towers would be 50 and 30 storeys with a 210-room hotel and 609 apartments plus 279 public car park spaces for market visitors and a public bike hub with showers, gym and pool. The complex would be designed by Callum Fraser from Elenberg Fraser.

Mr Fraser said MIT have had discussions with the Ace Hotel Group based in Portland, Oregon and New York about managing the hotel component. Ace operate hotels in New York, Palm Springs, Portland and Seattle.

Melbourne City Council research shows international tourists rate the Queen Victoria Market their No 1 destination in the CBD.
