Canberra social housing plan gets changes

The ACT government has approved changes to the territory plan that will allow the the government to demolish the Allawah, Bega and Currong public housing units, currently occupied by about 550 tenants, to build a complex that would allow more than 2000 residents.

The government had originally proposed two 15-storey and several six-storey buildings but has now reduced the height after community opposition.

ACT sustainable development minister Simon Corbell has announced a planning variation for the site had been approved. The variation included a reduced proposed building height from 15 to 12 storeys, an increase in the number of on-street car parks to be provided and a requirement for a minimum of 5800m² of space for community facilities to be provided on the site.
