Hospital hotel plan for Brisbane
Queensland premier Campbell Newman has confirmed his government plans to redevelop the Royal Children’s Hospital site at Herston and a privately run hotel was likely to be a feature.
A five-star hospital hotel would stretch health dollars and free up hospital beds citing similar facilities used in Scandinavian countries for patients who do not require a high level of medical care. These are operated by accommodation chains and rely on family members looking after patients with just a small numbers of medical staff in the event of emergencies.
Mr Newman said, “We’re looking at opportunities to get better value out of the public health dollar and better serve patients. That’s what it’s all about.”
Health minister Lawrence Springborg said a patient in a hotel was far more cost-effective than being in a hospital ward and they can enjoy a beautiful surrounding with their family.
