Strata Party gives owners a voice!

When anyone associated with strata titles, owners corporations or body corporate committees votes in the NSW state elections next weekend, they can select a party set up just for them.

On 18 March the Strata Party was launched, fielding a group of 15 candidates for the NSW upper house. Many of the candidates are experienced Owners Corporation Network members, joined by others committed to improving strata living.

OCN members have firsthand experience of the particular problems of living in strata and know that the list of reforms needed gets longer every day. The Strata Party will:

• Press for the introduction of the stalled NSW Strata Schemes Management Bill early in the next parliament
• Seek to restore the protections against defective building work in new buildings eroded by the Home Building Amendment Act 2014
• Ensure the construction industry is made more accountable for the quality of new residential strata buildings
• Support initiatives to build communities in strata, based on trust and transparency, and encourage more resident and owner participation
• Advocate legislative change and performance standards to make service providers to strata schemes more accountable and transparent

Strata residents and owners are struggling to live in the 21st century with antiquated strata laws. A voice in parliament is one more step towards changing this. Strata residents and owners know they have been short changed on consumer protection and are exposed to financial risk through inadequate controls on the construction industry. An elected Strata Party member can work with OCN to change this. For the first time strata residents and owners have a chance to have their voice heard in parliament, according to OCN.
