Old Vic becomes new again

Melbourne’s historic The Victoria Hotel – part of Accor’s ibis Styles brand -recently completed the refurbishment of all its rooms, with new bedding, bathrooms, furnishings and fast wifi added as part of the makeover. The lobby has also been upgraded, along with the mezzanine bar and lounge area.

The hotel boasts a rich and colourful history. A former Premier of Victoria, James Munro, established the hotel in 1880, as the Victoria Coffee Palace. The Vic remained ‘dry’ until 1967 and was briefly owned by the infamous Christopher Skase.

The hotel was bought by the Schwartz Family Company in 1998, which heralded a number of progressive changes and upgrades including the addition of a rooftop swimming pool and fitness centre.

SFC director, Jerry Schwartz, said, “We have retained that good old fashioned country charm, but the facilities have moved with the times, particularly with the installation of high-quality wifi throughout the buildings.”
