Tech-savvy kids are influencing your guests

Children’s entertainment and family-oriented travel has become an essential part of tourism in recent years and accommodation providers have puzzled over the best way to capitalise on a child-friendly market.

Australian children are more tablet and mobile-friendly than ever and are spending $1.8 billion a year, according to a new report.Owner of Cartoon Network, Turner International Asia Pacific has published findings from a New Generations survey that present valuable insight for the accommodation industry.

This report revealed that children have a huge influence over household purchases, weekend activities and family holidays.

1,001 responses from parent-child pairings were compiled in this latest research, which found that 37 percent of four to 14-year-olds use tablet devices, 20 per cent via mobile phone.

14 per cent of the same group now own a smartphone themselves, a figure that has risen from just eight per cent in 2013.

Playing games and watching videos are the two most popular online leisure activities for children. Free wifi then could be a selling point for families.

A huge increase came in the form of app-use as 20 per cent more children used them this time around than at the time of the survey in 2013.

Director of Research and Planning at Turner International Asia Pacific David Webb said: “As tablet and mobile devices continue to proliferate homes, the way kids access entertainment and games continues to evolve.”

“We’ve seen a significant shift in the amount of time spent watching online videos because of this, but playing games and the use of apps is still how kids choose to spend the majority of their online leisure time and there’s no indication that this trend will change.”

He added: “Australia’s youngest consumers are avid users of television and digital media. With $1.8 billion in spending power and significant purchasing influence over parents they can’t afford to be ignored.”
