Skills you should be demanding from future workers in tourism

The industry needs more skilled workers as Australian tourism grows an expected 20 per cent over the next four years, according to a new report.

Service Skills Australia recently published a paper on what factors affect the workforce make-up and what skills are needed.

Some of these factors include a “highly casualised workforce”, according to the report, and the seasonal nature of the industry.

Key to expand the labour pool, is attracting employees with transferable skills. Customer service, cultural awareness, languages and digital and technology expertise in social media are some of the skills that are sorely needed.

The firm’s CEO Yasmin King said: “Consumers are now demanding new and unique experiences and top level service, at the same time they can check out the competition, compare prices and read reviews on their ever-handy devices.”

“Ensuring training is turning out graduates with the skills they really need in the workplace will help them become real engines of our economy and continue to compete successfully in the international context,” she added.
