Airbnb of caravans makes the great outdoors more accessible

Australia’s largest peer-to-peer caravan rental website MyCaravan officially relaunched today [10 June] to cater for the growing demand by Aussies looking to explore the great outdoors at a more affordable rate.

Caravanning and camping accounts for $7 billion of local expenditure annually. With a brand new name (formerly caramavan.com), MyCaravan, dubbed the ‘Airbnb of caravans’, connects owners who don’t use their caravan regularly, with those who are looking to rent caravans, motorhomes and camper-trailers at rates that are up to 50 per cent cheaper than commercial operators.

According to Caravan Industry Association of Australia, more than 85 per cent of Aussies stay in a caravan park at least once in their life so it’s easy to see why this sector is one of the fastest growing in Australia.

Like Airbnb, MyCaravan is all about connecting owners who don’t use their caravan regularly, with those who are looking to rent caravans, motorhomes and camper-trailers at rates that are up to 50 per cent cheaper than commercial operators. Typically, caravans are only used for a few weeks a year, the rest of the time they sit vacant.

MyCaravan provides a means to earn money from these valuable under-utilised assets.

MyCaravan provides one of the safest and most secure platforms for owners to rent their caravans that combines online ID verification, security bonds and reputation feedback to assess the trustworthiness of people using the peer-to-peer website.

For those without the experience of hauling caravans to their desired destination, MyCaravan’s unique No-Tow feature allows renters to have the caravans delivered to their chosen site. They simply find their vacation vehicle online, choose a site near the owner’s location, then simply drive to the destination. The caravan owner will deliver and setup the caravan for the renter, for a small fee.

Tim Bos, founder and general manager, MyCaravan, said the growing number of young Australians choosing caravaning and camping has led to an increased need for affordable rental options.

“Caravan registrations have experienced a higher rate of increase than any other vehicle type in the last two years and the number of registered caravans in Australia jumped year on year by 5 per cent, however, many of these caravans sit vacant for most of the year.” he said. “This growth is not solely a result of the ‘grey nomad’ market.

According to Caravan Industry Association of Australia, 35-49 year olds account for approximately 50 per cent of all travel in the sector.

“We’re known as the nation that loves the outdoors and with the sharing economy gaining more prevalence, MyCaravan is providing a service that’s effectively ensuring that more families get a chance to explore the country without breaking the bank.”

MyCaravan is owned by Collaborate Corporation Ltd, an ASX–listed company focused on delivering value to owners and renters through online peer-to-peer marketplaces.
