Hotel apps have so far failed to match OTAs in popularity, new report claims

Hotel apps are not yet ranking among the most popular apps for iPhone-users, according to new statistics pulled from the June travel analytic’s monthly iPhone Travel App Tracker.

Some of the most popular apps around the world, according to Strategy Analytic’s report, include Uber, Yelp, Foursquare and the navigation app Maps.ME, which was present in 100 per cent of all surveyed countries in every week of June.

OTAs were also a huge draw for travellers, representing eight of the 25 most popular apps. Those included Airbnb, booking.com, Expedia, Trivago, HotelTonight and Kayak.

The lack of hotel apps in the list has concerned accommodation providers looking to draw the attention of consumers away from OTAs.

One reason for the lack of branded hotel app presence could be that travellers download those apps for the length of their stay but keep OTA apps on their smartphones permanently. If this is the case then there may be room for hotel brands to develop apps that cater to a wider need than short term convenience.

As mobile devices continue to increase in popularity around the world, more and more travellers will seek to book their stay via their smartphone so this is something to consider.
