TripAdvisor morphs into booking site, releases earnings report

The divisive metasearch site seems to have launched its transition into a booking site over the last week, with many of the site’s hotels now displaying a ‘Book on TripAdvisor’ feature in the US.

Accor, Best Western, Radisson Hotels and others (including some high-end independent properties) have partnered up with TripAdvisor to enable users to book directly through the site although the specifics of each partnership remain under-wraps.

While there are still plenty of accommodation providers not displaying the new function, TripAdvisor has been collecting new ones recently, including Hyatt, Langham Hospitality and Mandarin Oriental among others.

The online channel performed worse than Wall Street expected in its second quarter financial results. Although the firm reported a 25 per cent revenue increase year-over-year, its total reported revenue missed analyst expectations by $8m.

On the financial report, TripAdvisor cited six new instant booking partnerships “including with Marriott and another major chain” as a quarter highlight.

To ‘book on TripAdvisor’, consumers will have to enter their credit card information and all other details into TripAdvisor’s user interface.

accomnews has approached TripAdvisor for more details on the instant booking rollout and what Australian accommodation providers can expect in the near future.
