‘This is Queensland’ app receives update

Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) recently launched a mobile device app to engage the community and encourage domestic and international visitors to explore the Sunshine State.

The app is able to provide travellers with information in relation to top things to see or do in the area, as well as upcoming events, and local accommodation and attractions. This has been possible through the use of iBeacons, a type of Near Field Communication and makes use of a new location-based technology which automatically transfers useful travel information to the app users.

According to Kate Jones, minister for tourism, major events and small business, more than 100 iBeacons were distributed across 13 of Queensland’s tourism destinations such as airports, visitor information centres, national parks and other popular tourism attractions.

The organisation said in a statement: “As a result, the user’s travel experience is made easier and can lead to greater enjoyment as the stress is taken out of planning. So far, the app has been a great success.”

“Users now have the ability to share their holiday experience with ease, direct from the app, search for drive itineraries, and even tailor-make their own itinerary. Other updates also include additional holiday tips, activity suggestions from local tourism operators, and even lists of wifi connections for users to use.

“The apps new features are aimed to benefit the huge number of drive visitors travelling through the state every year.”

The This is Queensland app is available for free download from both the Apple Store and Google Play.
