Hotels warned to consider security risks before agreeing to host anti-Islam politician

The AHA has warned hotels ahead of Mr Geert Wilders’ impending visit to Perth to ensure the safety of hotel employees and guests in line with facility management best practice.

“Political events can attract heightened levels of media exposure and public interest. In particular the actions of potential protestors pose the most risk.

“Appropriate precautionary steps need to be taken for any event or demonstration held at or in close proximity to a hospitality venue.

“Given the attention so far, Mr Wilders event may attract a larger than normal level of attention and potential protestors just as it has attracted attention in the media. Any commercial decision to host or accept a booking from Mr Wilders or an affiliate is entirely up to each business.

“The AHA does not suggest a boycott in any way or form. However, it is likely that any venue hosting this lecture will attract a high level of public attention and must therefore consider the security issues associated with such a visit.”

According to The Australian Newspaper: “Mr Wilders is one of a number of foreigners whose name is on a Movement Alert List maintained by the Department of Immigration and considered a potential serious threat to the Australian community”.

Mr Wilders’ political views are likely to attract attention and public protests and these protestors could become problematic. In 2013 Mr Wilders was granted a visa to come to Perth which was met with several objections from the community.

During his time here, Mr Wilders was accompanied by WA Police’s dignitary protection unit, as well as his own security team and past visits to the United States have sparked several violent demonstrations.
