Wyndham Seven Mile Beach implements community garden with help from Ability Tasmania
The eco-friendly Wyndham Vacation Resorts Seven Mile Beach is developing a community garden to cultivate fresh produce in partnership with disability support service, Ability Tasmania.
The community garden, which measures about 30 by 40 metres and is located on the resort grounds, will be used to grow a variety of vegetables and house the resort’s chicken coops.
The fresh produce cultivated in the garden will be used for the onsite Beaches Restaurant and will also be made available for resort guests to purchase and cook in their fully self-contained apartments.
The resort has been providing work experience opportunities for recruits from Ability Tasmania, a local not-for-profit organisation that provides employment opportunities to people with intellectual disabilities or who have an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The Ability Tasmania work experience participants have been helping to develop the garden by preparing the garden beds and will continue to assist with planting and ongoing maintenance of the produce.
Led by resort gardener Nathan Costelloe, staff will be responsible for the ongoing care of the community garden and guests will get the opportunity to have a hands-on experience when they stay at the resort by planting and picking the produce.
Wyndham Seven Mile Beach is an eco-friendly resort that has been inspired by the natural surrounds and designed to blend in with the elements.
Along with growing fresh produce, the resort practices the recycling, reusing and reducing principles that are part of the hotel company’s Wyndham Green program, including the use of kitchen scraps for compost and to feed the chickens.
