New board working towards planning for sustainable future for resorts

The newly established Alpine Resort Management Boards of Lake Mountain and Mount Baw Baw have announced they will work with a government created reference group to engage with the resorts’ stakeholders as it develops its recommendations to the government on what can make the resorts sustainable in the future, a future in which the respective alpine areas’ environments are likely to be impacted by the effects of climate change.

The chair of the newly appointed Boards, Allan Bawden said that addressing the long-term sustainability of the resorts would be a key priority for the Board, as it works with government to merge the governance and management of the two alpine resort management boards.

“Having come together last month in our first Board meeting since our appointment, we are enthusiastic and prepared to lead the process to determine the future,” said Mr Bawden.

“Our brief and purpose is clear, that is, to plan for the viability and continued growth of both resorts. While we certainly have an eye on the short-term opportunities and challenges, we are taking a long-term view of both resorts, particularly as the likely impact of climate change is to be addressed.

“The recommendations will ensure that the economic and social benefits that flow from the resorts to the surrounding regional communities are maximised.”
