New Westin resort for Sunshine Coast town

Starwood will launch a new five-star Westin hotel at Coolum on the Sunshine Coast in 2021 as part of a $1 billion mixed-use development planned by Japanese real estate giant Sekisui House.

The new 220-room Westin Coolum Resort will be developed on a 20 hectare site at Yaroomba Beach along David Low Way. The new resort will be less than 200 metres from the sea with direct access to the beach.

The new resort will contribute significantly to the Sunshine Coast’s business events sector, with 850 square metres of conference and events space. The resort will also offer four dining venues, a spa with six treatment rooms and extensive leisure facilities.

“The Westin Coolum Resort & Spa will be the first new build five star hotel to open on the Sunshine Coast in 27 years, supporting tourism growth and providing significant employment opportunities to the community,” said Sean Hunt vice president of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Pacific.

“Our vision is to provide visitors to this popular family holiday destination with a relaxing, five-star wellness retreat and the Westin brand is an ideal fit for both the location and the development,” said Toru Abe, CEO & managing director of Sekisui House Australia.

“We believe the Starwood Hotels & Resorts experience will be invaluable in arriving at a final plan for the hotel that respects the site and meets the Sunshine Coast council’s economic development needs; boosting tourism and awareness internationally for the region.”

Visit Sunshine Coast acting CEO said that the announcement of the new resort would provide a massive impetus to the region’s tourism sector.

“The Sunshine Coast’s international and domestic tourism performance has almost returned to its record levels of pre-GFC, but the region cannot meet the demand for luxury accommodation and conference facilities.

“With the proposed extension of the Sunshine Coast Airport, the addition of a high quality resort like the Westin can help us attract even more world-class conferences and events. With the 50th anniversary of the Sunshine Coast next year, this is a very welcome early birthday present.”
