You talking to me? Robert De Niro to oversee new hotel
London’s Westminster City Council has been talking to long-time Hollywood legend and budding hospitality impresario Robert De Niro, who welcomed the approval of his plans for a new luxury hotel in Covent Garden.
De Niro will be the joint owner of The Wellington Hotel, with initial planning approval rubber stamped for the creation of his impressive new 83-room luxury boutique hotel.
The new development will build upon the success of De Niro’s New York flagship independent hotel, the internationally renowned, The Greenwich Hotel. The five-star downtown Manhattan hotel is a design concept that opened in 2008, one that they created from the ground up.
On a Friday night, the hotel reportedly crawls with A-list clientele and is described by Architectural Digest as “the most beautiful hotel in the world”, mimicking a style that is very ‘Jay Gatsby hunting lodge’.
De Niro, Ira Drukier and Richard Born (BD Hotels) are the pioneering team behind the success of the luxury Manhattan boutique hotel concept and together they will create a bespoke hotel for Covent Garden.
The planned scheme includes luxury spa facilities, two restaurants, a deli/café and a members’ club, all of which will be built around a central courtyard conservatory and will rejuvenate a whole block within the Covent Garden conservation area.
De Niro commented: “My partners and I are pleased with the unanimous consent of Westminster City Council for The Wellington Hotel project in Covent Garden. We would like to thank them for putting their trust in our vision. We now look forward to starting the construction and to the completion of the hotel, of which we will all be proud.”
Set to become a must visit site and an iconic venue for London this landmark hotel should propel Robert De Niro and BD Hotels into the stratosphere of the world’s leading luxury hoteliers.
