Parrtjima: Festival in Light to encourage NT tourists in 2017

The Northern Territory Government will present the second annual Parrtjima – A Festival in Light event in Alice Springs from Friday, 22 September to Sunday, 1 October 2017, featuring an expanded program that celebrates the magnificent Aboriginal art of Central Australia.

The spectacular free public event is the first authentic Indigenous light festival of its kind and showcases the oldest continuous culture on earth through the newest technology, on a 300-million-year-old natural canvas.

Andrew Hopper, general manager of Northern Territory Major Events Company, said the inaugural Parrtjima event captivated visitors with its breathtaking light displays, and the second event will be even more special.

“This is an exciting announcement for Central Australia; the festival is a wonderful boost for the tourism industry, the local economy and it creates jobs for locals,” Mr Hopper said.

“We are working closely with the tourism industry and our partners to deliver a world-class cultural experience throughout the festival that will attract thousands of visitors to Central Australia.

“The Northern Territory Government, through Northern Territory Major Events, is proud to support such a wonderful initiative.  Parrtjima is a celebration of Indigenous culture and will feature an expanded program to impress visitors from across the Territory, Australia and the world.

“Created in partnership with local Aboriginal artists and art centres, the event aims to raise the profile of Aboriginal artists from Central Australia by sharing their outstanding work and rich culture with the world.”

Parrtjima (pronounced Par-CHee-ma) means ‘lighting up’ and conveys two meanings: physically illuminating an object with light and ‘lighting up’ as in to shed light and understanding on a subject.

The 10-day event follows the outstanding success of the inaugural festival in 2016, which was attended by almost 16,000 people. For more information, please visit www.ParrtjimaAustralia.com.au
