Queensland comes out on top in Loved by Guests Awards 2017

Thirty-seven hotels in Australia have been revealed as the country’s ultimate hotel hotspots, according to the Loved by Guests Awards 2017, where the hotel guests are the judges.

If it was a State of Origin clash, Queensland would win fair and square with sixteen hotels across the sunshine state scooping a Loved by Guests gold award. New South Wales was hot on its heels, coming in second place with ten gold gongs in total.

In Victoria, five hotels nabbed a gold award, Tasmania received four for its hotels, and the ACT and South Australia both secured one gold each.

To find this year’s best of the best, the travel experts analysed millions of guest reviews, with 2500 hotels across 87 countries being recognised as truly outstanding. Those taking home the top prize of a Loved by Guests gold award* have all achieved an average guest review rating of 4.7 or higher* (out of 5).

Best in show

Queensland again led the pack when it came to the ‘best for’ category winners, with seven hotels in the sixteen-strong round-up taking out gongs for luxury, business, new and spa hotels. New South Wales scooped four top awards in the spa, business and luxury categories, while Victoria nabbed three awards for new, business and luxury, and South Australia’s Adelaide reigned supreme in both the business and luxury category. marketing manager for Australia and New Zealand, David Spasovic, said: “When today’s mobile-savvy travellers are thinking of heading to the sunshine state for a mid-winter escape, seeking out an amazing spa hotel or just want some all-inclusive indulgence, then they should look no further than the 1,000 hotel winners in the Loved by Guests ‘best for’ categories**.”

Overall, Australia took out 13th place in the world for top-rated hotels as voted by guests.

“The fact that Australian hotels have done so well across the board is a credit to the incredible quality and service on offer to travellers looking for accommodation nestled in the beauty of our incredible landscape,” said Mr Spasovic.

Worldwide, hotels in the United States were the biggest gold award winners, with 969 properties being recognised. Other top countries included the United Kingdom (171 hotels), Italy (153), Canada (86) and Spain (70).

Destinations around the globe where travellers were most likely to check into a gold award-winning hotel were: London (31 hotels), Rome (27), Prague (25), Florence (24), Venice (24) and Hanoi (23).

Everyday influencers

Mr Spasovic noted the increasing shift in what factors influenced travellers in their hotel booking journey and decisions.

“The Loved by Guests Awards celebrate those top-notch hotels that guests loved and want to share with others. We’re seeing a shift in reviews becoming a more powerful influence than official star ratings, especially as these can be read instantly on travellers’ smartphones on the go.

“With over 25 million trusted, genuine guest reviews on the website, there’s no doubt that we can offer travellers inspiration when daydreaming about their next trip away, but also help travellers make informed decisions on the best hotels for them,” he said.

Turning up the turndown service

I was recently reminded of turndown services whilst staying at a South Australian hotel. Having not requested a turndown service in some time, I arranged the service for one evening – and to my surprise, the service included everything but the ‘turning down’ of the bed.

Say g’day to Australia’s newest, largest park network

In a move that promises to transform Australia’s caravan and camping sector, Discovery Parks has acquired the Top Parks brand, creating Australia’s largest network of parks.

The big problems with booking direct

Conscious of the impact on accommodation providers, I decided to book a recent trip directly through hotel websites. To my disappointment, the process was not a simple one.
