Australian beach named world’s most popular

Whitsunday Island’s Whitehaven Beach is the most Instagram-snapped beach on the planet.

New research by TravelSupermarket has revealed the world’s most popular beaches according to how many times they’ve starred on the social media app.

A massive 129,585 photos feature the hashtag #whitehavenbeach, making the gorgeous Queensland beach the most snapped globally.

Boasting white sands and crystalline waters, Whitehaven was rated number one beach in the South Pacific as part of the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards for 2017.

Its azure shallows are often visited by turtles species and other marine life, including dolphins.

The beach stretches over seven kilometres, with Hill Inlet at its northern end a fusion of colours as the tide shifts the sand and water.

Just a short bushwalk way, Tongue Point lookout offers the perfect Instagram-able vantage point, or boat tours departing from Airlie Beach provide viewing platforms for the optimum snap moment.

Whitehaven beat out Lanikai Beach, Hawaii (117,575 photos) and Horseshoe Bay Bermuda (90,404) to take top spot.

The golden shores of Cuba’s Cayo Coco came in at fourth and the pristine white sands of Bavaro Beach in the Dominican Republic fifth, while South Africa’s Bavaro Beach with its ancient granite boulders and plethora of African penguins was sixth most posted.

Bournemouth Beach in southern England is perhaps the most surprise inclusion on the list, its historic pier making it a popular photo subject and helping elevate it to seventh most Instagram-snapped seaside on the planet.

Bahamian beauty Pink Sands Beach, Ao Nang Beach in Thailand and Mexico’s Playa Paraiso round out the top ten.
