Smelly guest threatened by disgruntled Airbnb host

A jet-lagged Airbnb guest who slept without showering after arriving at his New York accom was berated about personal hygiene in a note from the property’s owner the following morning.

According to a post on social media platform Reddit, the host threatened to report 26-year-old Jack to the listings platform for failing to wash before bed because he had a “strong body odour”.

Jack had rented the room from a woman named Clara on a recent trip to the Big Apple, arriving at around 10pm local time, which he said was about 3am in his time zone.

After he arrived, Clara gave him a tour of the bedroom he would be staying in before he told her he was “exhausted” and “just wanted to go to bed”.

When he woke at 4am, Jack said, he found a handwritten note had been slid under his door.

“Hi Jack, this might be your first time doing Airbnb so you should understand a few standard etiquettes,” it read.

“Airbnb is hosting so it is very different from a hotel or motel. You need to keep the room clean and free of odour because you are staying in someone else’s room.

“After your flight, you had a strong odour yet you didn’t take a shower before going to bed.

“As the owner of the room, the bed and the sheets, I am extremely displeased with this fact. You didn’t respect the cleanliness of my room.”

It went on: “I might have to report to Airbnb if you fail to keep up with the personal hygiene and lower the quality of my room.”

The allegedly smelly guest, who describes himself as a “shower in the morning person”, took to the Reddit forum AITA (short for Am I The A-hole) to ask if his decision to go to bed without showering was poor Airbnb etiquette.

Support flowed in from others on the forum, one telling Jack: “If she washes her sheets (which we’ve got hope she does) this is a non issue… I can’t imagine your plane ride made you smell so bad that she can’t wash it out. Writing a long passive aggressive letter is just uncalled for.”

Another said: “The host is obligated to wash the sheets and there is no obligation that you have to shower before you get in bed.

One commenter saw the funny side, questioning how far the host intended to go in prescribing the habits of her guests.

“What if a couple is in there hooking up? Is she going to dictate terms on that? She seems to want the income from hosting but at zero cost to her,” they said.

The AITA forum labels itself  ‘a place to finally find out if you were wrong in an argument that’s been bothering you’.

Jack, who told fellow social media users he’d “not been able to stop thinking about the handwritten note”, was vindicated, with the vote finishing 34 to 3 in his favour.

“If you’re worried about people’s funk… don’t rent your room out to others,” he wrote as a parting shot to his odour-averse host.
