Lights, camera, action: Preparing your place for a photoshoot

Every detail tells a story — prepare your property like it’s opening night, and your photos will inspire guests to book before they even read a word.

Great photography is one of the most powerful marketing tools an accommodation business has.

When it comes to selling your property online, nothing is more powerful than a great photo. A single image can spark wanderlust, create trust and inspire a booking before a guest has even read a word.

Mauro Risch, the Hotel Photographer

Few know this better than Mauro Risch, one of Australia’s leading hotel photographers, who has captured everything from boutique hideaways to international resorts.

He says that while the camera is important, the real magic happens before the first shot is taken.

“Hotels that prepare thoroughly get the best results,” Mauro explains.

“Every detail matters, because those details are what potential guests notice.”

Mauro’s top five must-do tips:

1 Clear and polish

Declutter every space. Hide rubbish bins, remote controls, compendiums, luggage racks and electrical cords. Clean the windows, polish metal surfaces and vacuum carpets so there are no footmarks. Linen and curtains should be freshly pressed and styled with care.

2 Set the mood

Check that every light bulb works and make sure the tones match, especially on bedside lamps. Stage rooms with flowers or small décor touches that create a welcoming atmosphere. Outdoors, ensure lawns are mowed, gardens trimmed and paths swept.

3 Plan for success

Book out the rooms being photographed and set them up a few hours ahead of time. Order flowers and props to arrive the night before or early on the day. Keep an iron, ironing board and steamer on hand to remove last minute creases. A luggage trolley will help move equipment and props easily.

4 Keep everyone in the loop

Share a photography run sheet with your staff so they know what is happening and when. Have a key contact list ready, and if staff will appear in shots, make sure release forms are signed. Most importantly, talk to your photographer about your vision. Be clear about the mood, look and highlights you want to capture.

5 Every detail counts

Great photography is always a team effort. Housekeeping ensures flawless linen, gardeners keep the outdoor areas fresh, and managers make sure every detail is in place.

As Mauro Risch says, “Stage your property as if it were opening night, because in many ways, it is.”

With the right preparation, your photos will not just show your property, they will capture the experience that keeps guests coming back.
