Avani Hotels & Resorts to debut in Wollongong with new-build hotel opening in 2027
Avani Hotels & Resorts is bringing its coastal-cool, design-forward approach to Wollongong, with a new-build hotel scheduled to open in 2027.
Avani Hotels & Resorts will make its Wollongong debut in 2027, with plans confirmed for a new-build hotel in the heart of the fast-growing NSW coastal city. The project marks Avani’s first purpose-built property in New South Wales and a significant milestone in the brand’s expansion across Australasia.
To be known as Avani Wollongong Hotel, the 107-room property will be introduced by Minor Hotels as part of a mixed-use development led by local developer Blaq Property Group. The hotel will be located at 22 Kenny Street, within walking distance of Wollongong’s central transport hub, CBD and city beach.

Positioned to support Wollongong’s ongoing transformation, the development has been designed to align with growth across the health precinct, CBD renewal projects and the revitalisation of nearby Port Kembla. Minor Hotels has also worked closely with Destination Wollongong to ensure the hotel supports the region’s long-term tourism strategy and major events calendar.
Destination Wollongong CEO Jeremy Wilshire said the commitment from an international brand reflects confidence in the city’s future.
“Having an internationally recognised brand commit its name and expertise here is a genuine vote of confidence in Wollongong’s trajectory,” he said. “It also marks an early step towards the NSW Government’s goal of delivering an additional 40,400 hotel rooms by 2035, and Wollongong is well placed to be a key contributor.”
Development approval for the project was granted by the City of Wollongong in July 2024. An application to increase the hotel’s capacity from 107 to 140 guest rooms is currently under assessment.

The hotel will feature contemporary rooms and suites ranging from 24sqm to 41sqm, designed to reflect Avani’s signature blend of smart functionality and relaxed, design-led style. High-tech amenities and thoughtfully planned layouts will cater to both business travellers and leisure guests drawn to Wollongong’s coastal lifestyle, food scene and creative culture.

Public spaces will be a key focus, with a ground-floor restaurant offering locally inspired dining, a bar designed as a social hub for guests and locals, and a flexible event space suited to meetings, celebrations and community gatherings.
Craig Hooley, Chief Operating Officer, Minor Hotels Australasia, said the project addresses a clear gap in the local market.
“Avani Wollongong will be our first Avani-branded property in New South Wales and will bring a breath of fresh air to this vibrant south coast city,” he said. “This development will fill a much-needed gap in new hotel growth in Wollongong and the Illawarra, delivering an upscale, contemporary stay for both business and leisure travellers.”
With the project progressing toward a 2027 opening, Avani Wollongong Hotel is set to play a central role in the city’s next phase of tourism and urban growth.
