Drifter Byron Bay opens, marking brand’s Australian debut
The design-led brand is reshaping what modern accommodation looks like for free-spirited travellers.
A new wave of design and socially-led accommodation has arrived in Australia with the opening of Drifter Byron Bay, the brand’s first full-scale Australian property.
The launch marks a milestone for Drifter, following the success of Drifter Christchurch in New Zealand in 2024 and the expansion of the “Little Drifter” premium hostel network along Australia’s east coast.

Unlike its hostel counterparts, Drifter Byron Bay combines the community spirit of shared accommodation with the design, service and amenities of a boutique hotel. Located just minutes from the beach on Lateen Lane, the 52-room, 260-bed property features a blend of private suites and shared suites, almost all with balconies overlooking a rooftop pool.

Redefining modern travel
Drifter CEO Luke Moran said the new property builds on the Christchurch blueprint while evolving the brand for Australia’s lifestyle-driven market.
“Today’s traveller is seeking so much more than just a place to sleep – they want connection, experience and community,” Moran said. “With Drifter Byron Bay, we’re creating something thoughtful, social and just a straight-up place to be.”
Co-Founder Hugh Stephenson said Byron Bay was a natural choice for Drifter’s first Australian flagship.
“Byron is already known for its culture, music, surfing and wellness. We’ve built a property that mirrors that energy,” Stephenson said.
A design-led experience
Led by project design and delivery head Larissa Fuller, the property’s interiors embrace a coastal-modern palette of ochres, maroons and sea greens layered with global influences. Communal areas are anchored by a dramatic aqua-toned rooftop pool and landscaped leisure deck, with tactile finishes and artworks throughout.

International artist Beni Single, whose large-scale murals featured in Christchurch, was again commissioned to create a pool-inspired mural and original canvases for Byron Bay.
Guests can make use of The Revel Room, a social dining and games area, a guest kitchen with personalised storage, and an open reception with lounge and co-working spaces.

The brand’s free guest programming continues in Byron, with events like Disco Drifter, The Cook Up communal dinners, and the Drifter Fit Check series, offering rotating wellbeing activities including yoga and run clubs.
