Brits choose Australia for winter sun

Australia tops the list as UK’s favourite winter holiday destination, Taboola data reveals

Australia has emerged as the number one winter getaway for British travellers, according to the latest data from Taboola, a global leader in content recommendations. With 3.9 million page views dedicated to Australia over the past 45 days, it’s clear that Brits are dreaming of sun-soaked adventures down under this winter.

Taboola’s extensive analysis of readership trends across its UK media network highlights Australia’s growing popularity as a winter escape, despite its considerable distance. In fact, Australia is almost twice as popular as South Africa, which secured the third spot with 2.1 million page views.

Sydney, in particular, saw a surge in interest, with a 35 percent rise in views for articles about the city.

The increasing focus on Australia as a prime winter destination comes as British travellers look to swap frosty temperatures for sun-drenched beaches and vibrant urban adventures.

While far-flung destinations are gaining traction, Taboola’s insights also reveal a growing interest in staycations, driven by the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. In fact, articles about UK travel surged by 250 percent, reflecting a strong shift towards budget-conscious holidaying closer to home.

Over the same period, budgeting and money-saving content racked up an impressive 9.3 million views, showing that many are opting to explore local attractions and traditional European destinations this winter.

Dave Struzzi, Communications Lead at Taboola, highlighted the contrasting trends: “On one hand, interest in long-haul escapes to warm-weather destinations is spiking. On the other, we’re seeing a surge in staycation interest, with people looking at winter breaks closer to home. This reflects the reality of tightened holiday budgets and varying travel priorities.”

These findings offer a unique snapshot of travel trends, giving valuable insights for the tourism industry, brands, and marketers as they cater to the diverse needs of UK holidaymakers.
