Changes to NT’s B&B rules please industry

Northern Territory’s bed and breakfast industry has welcomed the NT government plans to revise the regulations for B&Bs.

The government proposal says the term B&B is no longer appropriate because the business has broadened to include traditional homestay, self-contained cottages and farmstay. It suggests introducing a new “self assessable” planning category that would allow B&B owners to assess their own venture as long as it fitted in with the NT planning scheme.

But any properties wanting to cater for more than six guests would have to lodge a development application.

• The government plans go before the planning authority on Friday.

• The main proposals are:

• increasing the number of guests from five to six

• stipulating that the person operating the B&B lives on-site

• allowing rural B&Bs to have illuminated signs.

• renaming the industry “home-based tourist accommodation”

• allow owners to carry out development assessments.
