Renaissance at The Rocks

Sydney’s finest celebrated the rebirth of a historic site in the heart of the city last week with an event to mark the newly refurbished Harbour Rocks Hotel.

Hosted by television presenter Richard Wilkins and featuring intimate performances from singer David Campbell, harpist Victor Valdes and a quartet from the Sydney Symphony, the affair marked an exciting new chapter for the hotel.

Set in a beautiful sandstone and brickwork building erected in 1887, the hotel was once the site of the city’s first hospital. Several incarnations later, the building is now one of Sydney’s finest boutique hotels, a stunning and contemporary celebration of this unique structure.

As guests enjoyed a range of delicious canapés created by executive chef John Slaughter and sous chef Sabine Kowalewicz, sipped champagne and drank cocktails, they moved throughout the hotel. Taking in the new interiors for the first time, they looked through the ground floor wine bar, the Scarlett Restaurant below and the penthouse Harbour View Suite occupying the top floor.

Owner Robert Magid of TMG Developments, says the occasion heralds a new chapter for this historic site. “Throughout my extensive travels I’ve had the pleasure of staying in many of the finest boutique hotels in the world and I can now say without a doubt that the Harbour Rocks Hotel will be considered among them. The creativity and craftsmanship that we have seen put into the design will mean that our guests are staying in a truly world class hotel. This site bears important historical significance for the city of Sydney and we are very proud to offer a setting that pays homage to that.

Found in the centre of Sydney’s The Rocks, the Harbour Rocks Hotel offers a hotel experience completely unlike the glass and steel-filled structures of modern hotels. Each room bears a story, each space unique. The surrounding area offers guests the chance to experience the vibrancy and cultural richness of the area that includes an array of historical sights intrinsic to the history of the harbour city.

With intimate live performances, last nights gathering was a resplendent affair, marking an exciting new chapter for the hotel. A celebration of its history and its future successes.
