AHA backs Perth investment

The Australian Hotels Association has welcomed the announcement today of the new 500 room five-star luxury hotel, Crown Towers Perth to be built at the Burswood Entertainment Complex.

AHA(WA) CEO Bradley Woods said the state government and Crown Ltd were to be congratulated for their efforts to make this development and investment possible.
“This investment by Crown shows tremendous confidence in Perth’s accommodation hotel market, and the AHA congratulates the state government for their efforts to make this development a reality,” said Mr Woods. “The AHA understands the new Crown Towers Perth will feature 500, ultra-luxurious guestrooms over 25 floors, along with conference facilities for 1250 delegates.
“Hotel management companies from both within WA, Australia and internationally are interested in opening new hotels but there is a simple problem, the need to build or renovate buildings to create new hotels. The support shown by the state government for hotel development will encourage investors to make more substantial investments in the local industry.”
Casino operator Crown will spend $568 million on a new luxury hotel at its Burswood complex in Perth. The James Packer-controlled company said Crown Towers Hotel would be the largest in Perth, and create 500 new jobs once completed, plus 700 construction jobs.
Construction of the hotel tower will begin in 2013, with completion expected in 2016. The development will be built on land currently owned by Burswood, plus land to be bought from the West Australian government for $60 million. As part of its land purchase agreement with the government, Crown will be allowed to operate an additional 500 poker machines and 130 gaming tables at the Burswood casino.
The announcement comes as Crown seeks permission from New South Wales and Queensland gaming regulators to lift its stake in Echo Entertainment from 10% to 25%.
The Echo investment is part of a plan to engage its local rival in a joint venture focused on Asian VIP gamblers. Crown intends to create a billion-dollar luxury destination at Sydney’s harbour showpiece, Barangaroo, but needs Echo’s casino licence – and money – to do it.
Crown’s bid to build a new $1 billion Sydney hotel-VIP casino at Barangaroo has advanced with a deal with Lend Lease. Crown wants to build a 350-room hotel-casino at Barangaroo South, 100m south of a previous proposal Crown made for Barangaroo Central. Crown wants to include a number of high-roller gaming salons and a larger VIP gaming room, in a proposed “six-star” hotel at Barangaroo South.
The plans show it will also feature multiple “signature” Asian-focused restaurants, resort facilities (including a luxury pool deck) and a connection to a potential conference centre that could serve as an events location for the complex.
