Backpackers duped by employment scam

Two overseas backpackers have reported losing money after they responded to a fake website’s offer of accommodation and work as fruit pickers in WA’s South-West.

Consumer Protection is investigating the reports and is in the process of closing down the website – www.rossovineyard.com.au – that was set up using an ABN from a legitimate business registered in Canning Vale.

The victims claim to have transferred $200 each to a bank account in Victoria after they responded to an advertisement on Gumtree.

The Margaret River Wine Association has confirmed that the vineyard does not exist.

Commissioner for Consumer Protection Anne Driscoll warned travellers about the dangers of being scammed while trying to secure employment and accommodation in Australia. “In the past, many backpackers have been left out of pocket after handing over their money and giving their personal details, only to find out afterwards that the job doesn’t exist and they have become the victim of a scam,” Ms Driscoll said.

“Job-seekers responding to advertisements should carry out research into any job offer and independently verify if the proposed place of employment is legitimate. Contacting the local council or an industry association can confirm if the offer is genuine.

“Job seekers will receive extra protection if they deal through licensed employment agents who don’t charge prospective employees, only employers.”
