Industry groups finish G20 Brisbane training

Brisbane’s lord mayor Graham Quirk says that more than 1000 Brisbane tourism and hospitality workers and volunteers have now completed a free training program to ensure Brisbane is remembered as the ‘friendly G20 host city’.

“The Brisbane Welcomes the World Program is part of our city’s major leveraging efforts for G20 and beyond and more than 100 organisations have now taken part in face-to-face and online modules,” Cr Quirk said. “I’ve said many times that local businesses and volunteers will play an important role in the success of the G20 Leaders Summit, giving a warm welcome to the world leaders, 4000 delegates, and up to 3000 media representatives expected to attend the event.

“It’s great to see industry really embracing this opportunity and I congratulate all those who have recognised the importance of providing the best visitor experience we can as Brisbane takes the world stage for a week.

“With the Brisbane Global Café also shaping up to be another international success in the days immediately preceding the summit, its more important than ever that we give visitors a memorable experience.”

Service industry and volunteer organisations that have now completed training include: Sofitel, Mercure and Ibis Hotels, St John’s Cathedral, Kookaburra River Queens, Transdev Ferries (CityCats & Ferries), Hotel Urban Brisbane, QLD Maritime Museum, Oaks Hotels & Resorts, Watermark Hotel, Rydges South Bank, Wynnum Manly Visitor Centre, Moreton Bay Regional Council, Moreton Bay Visitor Centres, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Dolphin Wild, Star Corporate Cars, State Library of QLD, Queensland Museum, Newstead House and River City Cruises.

While face-to-face sessions have ended, businesses who still wish to engage with this training are encouraged to undertake the online modules course, offered free-of-charge, prior to G20. The G20 Taskforce is also putting more than 1000 staff and volunteers through the program in the lead-up to the summit.

“The taskforce recognises how valuable this program is and want to ensure all their staff and official volunteers are well equipped to be as welcoming, as friendly and as knowledgeable about the city as possible,” Cr Quirk said.
