Glamping changing face of holiday parks

At least 85 percent of Australians have gone camping in their lifetime, and camping is increasingly popular with women. Government research shows that women made up 48 percent of all visitors in the camping and caravanning sector in the year ending June 2014.

Camping is an experience that everyone can benefit from – whether it’s unwinding from a busy time at work, or reconnecting with friends and loved ones. A 2011 report titled Real Richness concludes that campers are more happy, energised, optimistic and satisfied than non-campers, and groups that camp feel more connected, healthier and wealthier.

Glamping – glamorous camping – is an emerging trend in the Australian (and international) holiday sector that combines the folksy fun of camping in the great outdoors with the luxury of a five-star set up. Caravan and holiday parks have undergone a facelift. These days there are parks outfitted with five-star luxuries and resort-style accommodation options – from safari-style tents to glamorous villas, and resort-style amenities like a day spa and pool-bar – to suit even the fussiest glamour puss. Glamping is all about comfort and style in a rustic setting – and perfect for a girls’ weekend away.

“Glamping is something that at first seems ridiculous – but it really is proof that opposites attract. Park owners are providing a service that they see the public want, and it is getting more popular every year,” said Stuart Lamont, CEO of Caravan Industry Association of Australia.

“It’s the sort of resort-style retreat that offers that little something different, and a wholesome experience people who went camping as children long to return to – without the composting toilets!”

Whether in a tent, hut, villa or tree-house, glamping is a way to experience the great outdoors without sacrificing luxury.
