Kate Jones is Queensland tourism minister

New Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has unveiled a ministry that includes eight women. Former Bligh environment minister Kate Jones – ouster of Campbell Newman in Ashgrove – has been given a super portfolio containing education, tourism, major events, small business and Commonwealth Games.

Labor has kept its pledge to elevate the Queensland tourism portfolio to a senior cabinet position, however with the overwhelming education portfolio undoubtedly taking precedence, it is doubtful the new minister will fare any better than her predecessor Jann Stuckey who had the same portfolio selection without education.

The Palaszczuk government has pledged $40 million over four years to help grow Queensland’s tourism industry with the Labor leader stressing the funding would be used to create jobs. The funding should boost Tourism and Events Queensland’s annual budget to the tune of $10 million a year.

Labor has also ruled out any imposition of a so-called bed tax.

Deputy premier Jackie Trad will be minister for transport along with the infrastructure, local government and planning, and trade portfolios.
