Should the accom industry be concerned about Amazon’s latest endeavour?

The online shopping juggernaut’s new “Destinations” landing page offers consumers the chance to book local getaways.

This site differs from its cousin, Amazon Local, because it accumulates ratings and reviews like the more familiar Amazon shopping site and takes a step back from more mainstream “last-minute bookings”.

What does this mean for the industry? For one thing it indicates a move towards prioritising local businesses over cheap further-afield packages.

Currently available only in the US, most of the accommodation providers listed on Amazon Destinations are independent hotels and smaller properties.

Hotel owners also have more price flexibility as they are able to list rooms at their regular prices, rather than limiting discount deals.

Properties still have to pay commission for each room booked through the site, although Amazon has so far declined to reveal the amount.

It looks as though Amazon could be trying to offer a new, niche type of OTA that caters slightly more to the hotelier, but what do you think? Is it a game-changer or another voice in the OTA crowd?

accomnews has approached Amazon for comment on its new developments and will inform you with any updates.
