How many Australians travel to the US?
Visit USA held its annual market update for members recently, unveiling some interesting statistics provided by the US Commercial Service.
In 2014, Australians travelled to the US in record numbers. It is ranked tenth for inbound visitor numbers with 1.28 million making the journey to the US, an increase of six per cent. Australia is also the tenth-largest market for visitor spending. The average length of stay for Australians is 21 days, with 85 percent travelling for leisure and over 67 percent are repeat visitors.
The major entry points for Australians travelling to the USA is not surprising with Los Angeles at 52 per cent and Honolulu at 20 per cent, followed by New York and San Francisco with just over five per cent and Dallas/Ft Worth just under five per cent.
Great news for the travel industry is that travel agencies are the major source for information at 48 per cent and handle 51 per cent of bookings. Booking accommodation in advance is common practice with nearly 85 per cent of Australian visitors to the US ensuring they have a place to stay before leaving home.
In 2015, it is forecast that Australian travel will increase a further two per cent to 1.3 million visitors. Over the last ten years, Australian travel to the US has more than doubled, delivering record-setting visitation. Few international markets have this record of growth. It is estimated between 2013 and 2019 Australian travel to the United States will grow by 25 per cent.
