Choosing the ideal washroom tissues and dispensers

They might seem like a relatively simple product but washrooms products have to cover a variety of tasks that are very important to us all.

If it is paper products, whether toilet tissue, facial tissues or hand towels, they need to be especially constructed as near as possible to the ideal combination of strength, absorption, dissolvability, disposability, appearance and aroma.

If it is dispensers for liquid soap, shampoo or other fluids, it is essential they be robust, reliable, easy-to-use and attractive.

With paper, toilets are highly likely to be the place where any problems will show up. Always susceptible to blockages, especially when guests use them to dispose of tissue not intended to rapidly break down in water, a good deal of staff time can be wasted, or even more expensively, require the services of a plumber.

For facial tissue, likely to be mainly used by women applying or removing makeup, it will need to have the ideal combination of suppleness and strength. Any sense of abrasiveness is not likely to be popular with the user, nor will they appreciate a product that falls apart easily.

Hygiene must also be considered. Especially in a situation where water and steam will be present and where other guests have been, any product that comes into contact with the skin will always have some possibility of infection.

And in these days of environmental awareness among both guests and the public, sustainability should be taken into account. Tissue that can be composted or recycled in some form is the ideal. More and more guests are warming to the idea that what they have just used will not end up in landfills. As council dumps gradually fill up, hotels and motels will increasingly find their disposal costs rising.

How much more advantageous it would be if that tissue could be composted on-site for the kitchen garden, or burned for energy in place of electricity, gas or another purchased fuel.

Also highly significant to both users and the management of any guest establishment, is the quality of the dispensers the products are in. Any fault here and problems will quickly become apparent in both guest annoyance and cleaning staff cost-effectiveness.

Frustrated users are likely to take matters into their own hands, very likely using more energy than they should do to free the tissues they want, which can lead to an unsightly mess of jammed paper that staff have to sort out, or even damage to the dispenser, leaving even more time to repair or possibly replace. Strong dispensers that function as smoothly as possible are essential and need to be carefully chosen and fitted.

Australian quality products

AMG asked two suppliers/manufacturers of tissue products or dispensers to the Australian market for their comments and advice regarding new trends and products – Solaris Paper and Expresso Services.

Solaris Paper manufactures the Livi range for both Australia and New Zealand, describing it as: “A commercial suite of innovative washroom and hygiene solutions for the hotel, restaurant and catering, cleaning and janitorial, educational and aged care industries.” It intends its range of toilet tissue, facial tissues, hand towels and dispensers to cater for every budget, “with a choice of economy, executive and premium luxury tiers that provide a high-quality product at an affordable price”.

Expresso Services has been supplying the hospitality industry with paper product solutions since the business was established 29 years ago. It stocks all common formats of paper products in quality levels, from economy to premium luxury. It also stocks washroom liquid dispensing systems, aerosol freshener systems and commercial laundry/kitchen dispensers.

Solaris Paper category marketing manager Joshua Hastings says the competitive nature of the hospitality industry has led to a rise in quality upgrading and choice for property owners and managers across Australia and New Zealand.

“We’re seeing a renewed focus on quality from our clients and we design our products to exceed these expectations, without exceeding their budget. High-quality toilet tissue is one of the best ways to make guests feel right at home when they’re away from home, which is why we produce a selection of toilet tissue and hand towels that are both functional and sustainable,” Mr Hastings said.

“Livi is committed to providing products that help clients achieve their sustainability targets. All tissue products are PEFC certified and made from virgin fibre, while our toilet tissue is dispersible and 100 percent biodegradable to keep the plumbing of its clients’ properties in optimal condition.”

Individual wrapping

At Expresso Services, accounts manager Paul Russell says: “With regard to toilet tissue, individually wrapped products are the main sellers. Individually wrapped two-ply is our benchmark product, with those who wish to differentiate themselves from the competition using superior three-ply. Though our product mix on individually wrapped products is largely virgin paper, we also stock recycled paper options.”

Mr Russell says the facial tissue trend increasingly includes the provision of pocket tissues in guest rooms, providing added value to guests when venturing outside the hotel. “This is in addition to the standard issue 100-sheet two-ply facial tissues (optionally wall-mounted in dispensers) or cube tissues in guest rooms.

“Provision of paper hand towel is a problematic area for hotels with excess wastage occurring with manually metered products. We can supply electronic dispensers, which detect a wave of the guest’s hand and pre-cut the hand towel on-demand, ensuring that each sheet dispensed from the roll is used to its full potential with no wastage,” Mr Russell said.

“Sustainability is increasingly becoming a core concern to hoteliers, their guests and their suppliers. Expresso Services has established long-term relationships with suppliers such as ESG, supplying 100 percent recycled washroom products.

“Our general advice would to be to use the individually wrapped products (and high quality individual amenities) in guest rooms and to consider a dispensing system with paper products, liquid dispensers and aerosol fresheners as a complete package to simplify maintenance, improve the user experience and reduce wastage in public and staff areas.”

Useful tissue tips

Joshua Hastings from Solaris Products offers the following tissue tips for property owners and managers who are looking to deliver an exceptional guest experience in their bathrooms and washrooms:

• When choosing toilet tissue, it is important to consider the right combination of softness and strength for your budget. The layer or number of ‘plies’ adds to strength, while embossing technology adds softness and bulk to the roll.
• Consider the expectations of guests in premium luxury properties by providing individually wrapped rolls for hygiene and presentation, and three-ply tissue with embossing for superior softness.
• For medium-to-high-traffic public washrooms, consider high-capacity jumbo toilet rolls (junior and full-sized) for minimum maintenance and maximum economy.
• Minimise washroom waste with hand towel dispensers designed for hygienic one-at-a-time dispensing.
• Offer guests the option of a practical mini-hand towel, dispensed at the door, as they leave the public washroom to guard against the spread of seasonal cold and flu germs.
• In-room hypoallergenic facial tissues give your guests peace of mind while lightly fragranced (on the core) toilet tissue rolls deliver a pleasant bathroom aroma.
• Give guests the ultimate reassurance of a superior clean, by topping off your bathroom assets with a toilet hygiene seal.
