QLD: Port Douglas and Airlie Beach among most charming beach towns in Australia

Port Douglas and Airlie Beach have both been voted among the most charming beach resorts in Australia in a survey conducted by Travelmag.com.

The online travel magazine invited more than 50 travel writers, photographers and selected professionals to name the three resorts that they consider the most appealing. All of the votes were then counted to produce the final ten.

Nestled on the Coral Sea in the tropical far north of Queensland, Port Douglas is a well-loved spot for locals and tourists alike and is a popular jumping off point for excursions to the Great Barrier Reef. The scenic coastal town is awash with white sandy shores, including the renowned Four Mile Beach, which is lined with palm trees and offers stunning views out to sea.

Airlie Beach, meanwhile, is another favourite, thanks to its idyllic setting on Queensland’s Whitsunday Coast, offering easy access to the beautiful Whitsunday Islands. It is also home to a lagoon featuring a man-made swimming area that draws large numbers of families thanks to its child-friendly amenities.

Elsewhere on the list are towns that span nearly every corner of Australia and that draw visitors from far and wide. The state of Victoria is represented by an impressive five towns: Aireys Inlet, Apollo Bay, Lorne, Port Fairy and Wye River, each boasting their own distinctive character and appeal.

In New South Wales, the towns of Byron Bay and Eden make the survey’s top ten, while Western Australia’s sole representative is Broome.
