Remote accommodation village sells for almost $12m

One of Australia’s most out of the way accom properties is to sell for almost $12 million – and turned into housing for marine workers.

The Port Melville (Tiwi Islands) Accommodation Village on Melville Island, 80kms off Darwin in the Timor Sea, boasts 32 ensuite rooms build with a category five cyclone rating, and mod cons including internet access, an ice maker, conference facilities, TV lounge, dining area, laundry and fully-equipped games room.

The accommodation camp is perfectly equipped to service its new clientele, with easy access to nearby Garden Point Airport and each 11m2 single occupancy guest room boasting ensuite shower and toilet facilities, TVs, mini fridges and study desks.

AusGroup, the construction and marine services provider behind NT Port and Marine, has recently established a fuel distribution business and intends to house its staff in comfort at the 119-person resort camp.

The group has signed a general deed of settlement and release with Charisma Energy Services, Aus Am Pte Ltd and Kingpost 2 International, under which all legal title and interests transferred to the company this week. However, the deal needs to secure final approval, with a deadline for completion of May 15.

While Melville island may be off the beaten track for many Australians, The Tiwi Islands boast some truly magical natural, cultural and tourism experiences.

They include Sail Darwin’s four-day Turtle Dreaming and Tiwi Islands tours and Tiwi Islands Adventures fishing trips.

And alongside the accommodation village, it boasts some far-from shabby accommodation. The island’s three accommodation lodges all boast Google reviews of more than four stars, Clearwater Island Lodge described as: “Great accommodation, fantastic views and amazing food. Service could not be better.”

AusGroup said the purchase of the Port Melville Accommodation Village is part of a long-term corporate strategy.

“The board is of the view that the proposed transfer of title, if completed, could potentially lead to strategic divestment plans for Port Melville and improving the group’s financial performance and position over a longer term, ” it stated.
