Icy Sydney sports igloos as sunny Broadbeach eyes new hotel

Based on this week’s weather, an igloo might not seem such an unusual accommodation option for Sydney Harbour.

Pier One Sydney Harbour is cashing in on the wintery vibe by offering eight waterside pop-up transparent igloos to rent through to September, with an overnight stay available for a cool $1300.

The Dream igloo suite, the only dome with a bed, comes with accompanying champagne, a cheese and charcuterie board and plenty of warm bedding for a romantic night under the stars.

Others can be booked for three-hour intervals, including a breakfast igloo, a dining igloo offering food prepared by the hatted Gantry Restaurant, and the 12-seat Snow Globe complete with a fire pit and faux flakes circulated by a snow machine.

A hot tub igloo provides a perfect starlit harbour vista away from the elements and three different-sized Winter Luxe igloos allow for ‘snug soirees’ of up to 20 people.

Each igloo offers luxe furnishings and fittings and million-dollar-views, but managers point out the new Snow Globe is pontoon-based, so high heels and swimming are both prohibited, furniture is deliberately low down and the deck moves with the water – not such a gentle swell right now.

Broadbeach’s star performer

Star Entertainment Group has brought forward construction of the second tower at its $2 billion Broadbeach Island development following strong interest from buyers.

The $500 million skyscraper is the second of seven towers proposed for the project, which is set to become the largest integrated resort in the country.

The new tower will deliver a 210-room hotel and 457 apartments over 63-storeys, with construction expected to commence in mid-2020.

An operator for the hotel, a new brand to the Gold Coast, will be named in the coming weeks.

“It will be a very exciting addition and the fourth hotel available on the island,” The Star Queensland’s managing director, Geoff Hogg, told The Urban Developer.

Broadbeach island is already home to two existing hotels – the 600-room The Darling and the recently refurbished Star Grand.

Mr Hogg said the consortium has moved forward construction plans following strong demand for accommodation on Broadbeach Island. The first residential tower, which will include Australia’s first Dorsett Hotel along with 423 residential apartments, has sold 92 percent of its real estate.

The Gold Coast Consortium responsible for the mammoth project is led by Star in a joint venture with Far East Consortium and Chow Tai Fook Enterprises. Each partner has a third equity share in both mixed-use towers.
