Veriu Group turns the sod in Maitland

New construct to be regional NSW city’s first branded property in a decade

Hot on the heels of opening its first Punthill Apartment-Hotel in Sydney’s Hills District, the Veriu Group has now set its sights on regional NSW with plans to build a new apartment-hotel in Maitland in the Lower Hunter Valley.

Set to be open in late 2023, the 76-key apartment Punthill Maitland, located in the heart of the city’s High Street commercial hub, will feature conference facilities, a gymnasium and café, and is intended to cater to both the corporate and leisure travel market.

The announcement has been met with considerable excitement by Maitland residents with the new property the first hotel brand slated to open in the city in more than a decade.

A sod-turning ceremony saw Veriu Group CEO, Zed Sanjana and developer Panthera Group joined by The Right Hon. Mayor of Maitland, Philip Penfold.

The development kicks off the Veriu Group’s ambitious expansion plan to roll out the successful Punthill apartment hotel accommodation model in regional NSW, with a number of other regional openings scheduled for the coming years.

Mr Sanjana said the decision to build its first NSW Punthill property in the Hunter Valley was a logical one.

“The Lower Hunter Valley has long been a key destination for both corporate and leisure travellers. But we also know that in a post-pandemic world, both groups now want to travel differently,” he said.

“From a corporate travel perspective, the region has great diversity of industry, including energy, construction, government and health being key drivers of the economy.

“The demand from these industries has translated into increasing demand for premium extended stay self-contained accommodation where guests can combine the benefits of business facilities with all the comforts of home.

“For leisure travellers the situation is slightly different again. We know there’s an all-time high number of people holidaying domestically.

“People are more inclined to want to travel closer to home and explore their own country, which has seen a huge boom in regional accommodation over the last few years compared to international which has become way more expensive.

“Certainly, the Hunter’s popularity as a tourism destination is showing no signs of abating.”
